IDAHO

Idaho is a landlocked state in the Pacific Northwest and Mountain West regions of the United States, officially admitted as the 43rd state on July 3, 1890. Known as the “Gem State,” it is celebrated for its diverse mountainous landscapes, vast wilderness, and agricultural production, particularly its world-famous potato crop.

Idaho’s history spans over 14,000 years, beginning with diverse Indigenous civilizations and evolving through European exploration, territory disputes, and its eventual 1890 admission to the Union.

Indigenous Peoples

  • Before European contact, Idaho was home to approximately 8,000 Indigenous people from two primary culture areas: the Plateau (north) and the Great Basin (south).
  • Northern Tribes (Plateau): The Nez Perce (Nimi’ipuu), Coeur d’Alene (Schitsu’umsh), and Kootenai (Ktunaxa) settled along the deep lakes and river valleys of the north. The Nez Perce held over 13 million acres across Idaho, Washington, and Oregon.
  • Southern Tribes (Great Basin): The Shoshone (including the Western and Northern bands) and the Bannock roamed the vast high deserts and plains of southern Idaho. They were highly nomadic, relying on salmon fishing and buffalo hunting.
  • Archaeological Significance: Recent evidence at Cooper’s Ferry suggests human presence in Idaho as early as 16,600 years ago, potentially making it one of the oldest human sites in North America.
